Bibliographies and Links
A major activity of the Centre for Research into Freemasonry will be the production of critical bibliographies and guides to research resources for the use of scholars wishing to investigate the social, historical and cultural impact of freemasonry, particularly in Britain. An
introductory bibliography of English language works on the history of freemasonry, containing detailed notes on the contents of approximately 150 articles and books, is available on this site. Future bibliographies shortly to be available here also include a bibliography of histories of craft freemasonry, the Royal Arch and additional degrees for all English counties and major towns, a review of recent literature on medieval guilds, and a bibliography of the works of the 'Sheffield school' of masonic historians associated with Douglas Knoop.
For family historians wishing to trace whether their ancestor was a freemason, a very useful article by Rebecca Coombes, the Librarian at the Library and Museum of Freemasonry, was published in Family History Monthly, 73 (October 2001), pp. 22-25. The article also gives a useful overview of some of the major classes of archives held by the United Grand Lodge of England. It is available
here, by permission of
Family History Monthly.
There are now many thousands of sites on the World Wide Web relating to freemasonry. The
United Grand Lodge of England website includes the current issue of Grand Lodge News together with links to sites maintained by provincial grand lodges and other organisations. Masonic magazines with sites on the web include
Freemasonry Today. The premier research lodge for England is
Quator Coronati Lodge No. 2076. There are even Internet Lodges of freemasons, such as
Internet Lodge No. 9659, established under the English Constitution. Masonic sites providing a wide range of links include
EM@son and
TheFreemason and the
Pietre Stones Review of Freemasonry.
